WHY PALERMO IS THE ITALIAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2018
The city of Palermo considers the candidacy as Italian Capital of Culture, as a further opportunity to transform its complexities and contradictions into regenerative elements, in order to carry out a process of urban, social and cultural transformation based on respect for rights and legality.
Palermo is a mosaic city, of which each tesserae is an expression of different worlds.
To testify it is its landscape, its language, its monuments, its cuisine and its urban fabric.
The symbol of this condition is the Tombstone, housed in the Palazzo della Zisa: a funerary stele dated 1149, in Jewish, Latin, Greek and Arabic, which integrates the different dating systems of the world and demonstrates the multi-ethnicity of the court of Roger II- for example, respect for all religions and all the peoples who inhabited Sicily, and so is the coexistence of the cult of Santa Rosalia, patron saint of the city, with that of the Holy Black Benedict the Moor. The cultural project, in which the candidature for the Italian Capital of Culture 2018 is inserted, forms a formal foundation in acts of address and deliberations of the Government Council and assumes as the main attractors and drivers of social and economic cultural development the realization of Manifesta XII and the enhancement of the Norman Arab itinerary recognized in the UNESCO WHL.
